Weight Loss Pill Lorcaserin Does Not Increase the Risk of Cardiovascular Problems

Weight loss drug Lorcaserin has proven efficacy for weight loss in overweight/obese adults.bmi obesity

The medicine works by suppressing appetite and should be taken twice a day. It costs around $220-290 (£155-225) per month in the US.

Scientists also found that Lorcaserin did not raise the risk of cardiovascular problems.

12,000 obese/overweight adults who suffer from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors took part in the study. They were given Lorcaserin 10mg twice daily or placebo (a substance that is made to resemble Lorcaserin but do not contain the active ingredient).

The results showed that those taking Lorcaserin 10mg lost an average of 4kg over 40 months without the risk of further heart problems.

Lorcaserin is currently available in the US under the name Belviq.

The drug is not available in the UK or EU, as it would need a European license and be approved by NICE before doctors can start to prescribe Lorcaserin.

Do You Want To Live As Long As The Queen?

Once you reach the age of 90, you stop ageing, according to Michael Rose, a professor of evolutionary biology.

Professor Rose suggests that you should start a ‘Stone Age’ diet from the age of 30.

The diet should include fruits, nuts, seafood and vegetables and grains and dairy products should be avoided.

For those in doubt, the University of California professor practises what he preaches. He says: ‘I have been following such a diet – avoiding grass-derived foods, such as grains, rice, corn and sugar cane, and anything made from milk – for two years and the results have been good.’

Statistics have shown that ageing seems to come to a halt at 93 and does not start again until we get a telegram from the Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II is currently celebrating her 90th birthday.

High-fat Mediterranean Diet Is The Key To Weight Loss.

Counting calories may be a waste of time and dieters should instead focus on having a calorie-rich diet packed with ‘good’ fats, according to new research.

mediterranean diet

Scientists, from the University of Barcelona, tracked 7,500 men and women who either had type 2 diabetes or were at risk of heart disease.

The participants, from Spain, were analysed for 5 years and put on one of three diets.

One group had an unrestricted Mediterranean diet especially rich in olive oil, a second had a similar unrestricted diet packed with nuts, and the third group followed a conventional ‘slimmers’ diet that avoided all kinds of fat.

At the end of the five years, all three groups had lost a small amount of weight, but the participants who had the Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil had lost the most weight – an average of 0.88kg (1.9 pounds).

Those on the nut-rich diet lost the least weight – 0.40kg (0.88 pounds).

Good News For Dieters – ‘Cheat Day’ Will Help You Lose Weight

We have some good news for those on a diet – cheat days do help you lose weight!cheat day

Scientists say that a once a week cheat day to eat sugary treats can make it easier for dieters to lose weight.

According to recent research, planned cheat days help slimmers to resist the temptation the rest of the time and makes dieting more appetising.

Researchers carried out three experiments.

In the first experiment, 59 men and women role-played being on a diet. Half imagined being on a traditonal diet, while the other half dieted for six days and had a cheat day on the seventh day.

At the end of the procedure, they had to imagine walking down a supermarket snack aisle when hungry and think of ways to avoid giving in to temptation.

The results found that those who had the cheat day diet came up with more methods.

In the second experiment, researchers observed the weight, mood and willpower of 36 men and women who actually dieted for 2 weeks. Half followed a strict diet of 1,500 calories a day and the others ate 1,300 calories a day – apart from on Sundays, when they could eat 2,700 calories.

Tests showed that those who had the cheat day had stronger self-control than those who had the conventional diet. They were also happier, more motivated and lost just as much weight.

The final experiment showed that the same theory can apply to other goals such as saving money, where the occasional spending spree can make it easier to stick to a budget.

Researcher Marcel Zeelenberg, of Tilburg University in the Netherlands, said: ‘The findings… show it is important to plan hedonistic moments in goal pursuit when it is “good to be bad”.

Sometimes it is good in the long run to be temporarily bad in the short run.’

Five-A-Day Keeps The Doctor Away

Eating your five-a-day can help prevent heart attack or stroke, experts have revealed. five-a-day fruit

For seven years, scientists at the University of Oxford studied half a million people from across 10 urban and rural localities in China by tracking their health through electronic hospital records and death records.

The 500,000 participants did not have a history of taking medication to lower high blood pressure (hypertension) or cardiovascular disease when they joined the study.

Study author, Dr Huaidong Du, said: ‘The association between fruit consumption and cardiovascular risk seems to be stronger in China, where many still eat little fruit, than in high-income countries where daily consumption of fruit is more common.’

The results revealed that 100g of fruit each day lowered the risk of premature death from stroke or heart attack by a third, for both men and women.

They found that fruits, such as apples and oranges, were strongly linked with other factors such as lower blood glucose, education, lower blood pressure and not smoking.

The senior author, Professor Zhengming Chen, from Oxford University, said: ‘It’s difficult to know whether the lower risk in people who eat more fresh fruit is because of a real protective effect.

If it is, then widespread consumption of fresh fruit in China could prevent about half a million cardiovascular deaths a year, including 200,000 before age 70, and even larger numbers of non-fatal strokes and heart attacks.’

Fruit and vegetables are one of the 5 food groups which contribute towards a healthy balanced diet.

However fruit and vegetables aren’t on the top of everyone’s shopping list as they are more expensive compared to processed ready meals.

According to a study by the Overseas Development Institute this has caused a huge rise in obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Obesity can cause many health problems such as high blood pressure, stroke and coronary heart disease.

Could Orbera Be The Key To Weight Loss?

Orbera may be the new solution for adults struggling to lose weight, without the need for surgery. orbera

Orbera is a tiny balloon that is inserted in the stomach through the mouth, with an endoscope.

An endoscope is a long, thin medical device usually used to look inside a body cavity or organ.

The insertion is a non-surgical outpatient procedure and takes around 30 minutes.

Once the balloon is in place it is inflated with saline.

The balloon stays in place for 6 months and will help regulate portion control.

During the 6 months, and for 6 months after the balloon has been removed, the patient will also undergo coaching to help with their diet and excerise.

Orbera is suitable for patients who are morbidly obese, with a BMI (body mass index) of 30 to 40 and have already tried other diets and exercise options.

255  patients participated in a clinical trail for Orbera for 1 year.

Of the group, 125 patients had Orbera in place for 6 months and then removed.

The remaining 130 patients took part in a behavior modification program for a year, but did not receive the device.

The results showed that patients with Orbera lost an average of 21.8 pounds after the device was in place for six months.

Those patients managed to maintain an average 19.4 pounds weight loss three months after it was removed.

The 130 patients who didn’t receive the device only lost an average of 7 pounds.

The prescription only medicine Xenical is available for adults who are overweight with a BMI of 28 or over.
