Around 40-70% of men will experience sexual dysfunction at some point in life.
To avoid the embarrassment of speaking to their doctor or paying for a prescription, many buy over-the-counter (OTC) products.
However some over-the-counter drugs which are sold as alternatives to prescription only medication (POM) actually contain the active ingredients of the prescription only drugs.
It has been found that an OTC product was advertised as “natural” but contained Sildenafil, the same ingredient found in the prescription only medicine Viagra which is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).
Sildenafil belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase-5-inhibitors (PDE5Is).
PDE5is cannot be legally sold over-the-counter as taking them without doctors supervision can be dangerous for someone with an undiagnosed cardiac condition, and other conditions such as high or low blood pressure.
