Could Viagra Be A Cure For Blindness?

It has been suggested that Viagra could prevent further loss of vision for patients with poor eyesight and even repair eye damage.

Scientists at Columbia University in New York have been conducting a two year trail. They suggest that Viagra could stop age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

AMD is the UK’s leading cause of blindness.viagra

Recent research have found that AMD is partly caused by reduced blood flow to the choroid (a vital layer of tissue that sits in front of the retina), and it has been found that Viagra can improve blood flow to this tissue.

Viagra is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

If You Take Viagra You Are Less Likely To Suffer From A Heart Attack

Men who take Viagra, a drug to treat impotence, are less likely to suffer from a heart attack or die from heart failure, new research suggests.

Experts from the University of Manchester studied 6,000 diabetic patients who had been prescribed Viagra to treat impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction.

Although it is common for diabetics to have heart problems, the participants did not suffer as many incidents as similar patients not taking Viagra.

Viagra works by helping to relax the blood vessels in your penis.

Viagra belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5i) and experts believe this is the key ingredient which helps prevent damage to heart cells.

Professor Andrew Trafford said: ‘Heart failure is a devastating condition which means your heart is not pumping blood around your body as well as it used to.

It can really impact a person’s quality of life and currently the outlook for patients with heart failure is grim – worse than that of some cancers.

The team is now assessing whether the same drug can also prevent abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) which are responsible for killing up to half of heart failure patients.

Previous research published in the journal BMC Medicine showed how Viagra (also known as sidenfil citrate) could help to prevent the heart increasing in size and changing shape in patients with a condition called left ventricular hypertrophy.

Our studies have shown that drugs normally used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, such as Viagra, actually have a very pronounced effect in slowing the progression of heart failure as well as reducing the likelihood of fatal arrhythmias.

We have recently established that patients who receive Viagra or similar drugs for erectile dysfunction are also far less likely to then go on and die from a heart attack.’

Viagra was originally developed to treat heart conditions, but during original trails it was found to be more effective at treating erectile dysfunction.

New Viagra Skin Patch

In 1998, Viagra was the first and only oral pill to be approved by the FDA to treat impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction.

Scientists have been trying for many years to develop new ways to get a drug like Viagra into the blood stream without going via the stomach to reduce the risk of side effects.

But a team at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, along with scientists at Cairo University have made a breakthrough  and developed the first stick on patch to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), containing the same active ingredient in Viagra – Sildenafil Citrate.

The patch can take effect within minutes and still be effective beyond 10 hours, compared to Viagra which takes 30-60 minutes to take effect and is only effective for up to 4 hours.

Men will no longer suffer from the side effects which are caused by ingesting the little blue pill such as indigestion, migraines and headaches.

The new skin plaster, which can be worn on the upper arm or abdomen, has been tested on rats and the results were promising.

There are currently no indications as to when (or if) it will be approved for use in the UK.

If it does get approved, it will only be available as a Prescription Only Medication (POM) like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.

So, until the patch actually becomes available, if you, or someone you love, have been diagnosed with ED, then perhaps prescription medication (such as Cialis, Levitra, or Viagra) would be an appropriate treatment.

Could Sildenafil Increase Skin Cancer Risk?

Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, was originally developed to treat heart conditions, but during original trials it was found to be more effective at treating erectile dysfunction (also known as impotence).sildenafil

But now, scientists have warned that the drug could increase the risk of melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Researchers at the University of Tübingen in Germany have discovered that Sildenafil can encourage tumors to grow more rapidly.

A recent study found that Sildenafil can stimulate skin cancer growth.

Sildenafil has a stimulating effect on the messenger molecule cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which promotes the growth of existing malignant melanomas.

The scientist came to this conclusion through animal experiments and human cell cultures.

Cells normally contain an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), that ensures the newly-formed cGMP is continuously broken down.

But, Sildenafil belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE 5) inhibitors.

Study author Professor Robert Feil said: ‘Taking sildenafil basically disables this brake.’

Consequently, the melanoma begins to grow more aggressively.

However, the study noted that there is no reason for men to stop taking PDE5 inhibitors to treat erectile dysfunction.

The researchers also have to take into account that the possibility that a higher incidence of skin cancer may be due to lifestyles, including sunbathing on holiday.

Professor Feil warned: ‘Ultimately, we should all be thinking about reducing our risk of skin cancer and cutting our exposure time to the sun, as well as using effective UV protection.’

Sildenafil is marketed as Viagra and was approved by FDA (The Food and Drug Administration) on 27th March 1988. Pfizer’s patent on Sildenafil expired on 21 June 2013.

If you are concerned that Sildenafil (Viagra) could increase the risk of skin cancer then there is other alternative prescription only  medication for erectile dysfunction such as Cialis and Levitra.

Over-The-Counter Supplements May Be Unsafe

Around 40-70% of men will experience sexual dysfunction at some point in life. herbal viagra

To avoid the embarrassment of speaking to their doctor or paying for a prescription, many buy over-the-counter (OTC) products.

However some over-the-counter drugs which are sold as alternatives to prescription only medication (POM) actually contain the active ingredients of the prescription only drugs.

It has been found that an OTC product was advertised as “natural” but contained Sildenafil, the same ingredient found in the prescription only medicine Viagra which is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).

Sildenafil belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase-5-inhibitors (PDE5Is).

PDE5is cannot be legally sold over-the-counter as taking them without doctors supervision can be dangerous for someone with an undiagnosed cardiac condition, and other conditions such as high or low blood pressure.

Shocking Alternative to Viagra

During a recent meeting of the European Society for Sexual Medicine in Madrid, Spain, it was proposed that, according to recent studies, extra-corporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) could provide a long-term treatment for erectile dysfunction.

In a Scandinavian study of the potential effectiveness of ESWT, 112 men with erectile dysfunction took part. Half of the men received five weekly doses of low-intensity sound waves to six parts of their penis. The other 56 men were given a placebo (a treatment, such as a tablet, that does not contain an active ingredient/component).

At the start of the study none of the men were able to have penetrative sex without medication. However, by the end of the study 57% of the men who received the low-intensity sound waves (via ESWT) said they could have sex without medication, in contrast to the 9% who were given a placebo.

Herbal_Viagra_Roadside3U.S health authorities have warned consumers about the risks of “herbal” non-prescription products that are being sold to enhance  sexual performance.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have discovered that some supplements sold as “herbal alternatives” to prescription-only medications (POMs) to treat erectile dysfunction (such as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra) actually contain the active ingredients of those drugs.

Sildenafil, the active ingredient to Viagra, can be dangerous for someone with an undiagnosed cardiac condition.

Breaking News – Worldwide Crackdown on fake prescription drugs

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulation Agency (MHRA) says more than a million doses of fake prescription drugs worth approximately £2m have been seized from the UK’s postal service and ports during its latest crackdown.

Packages from Australia, Canada and New Zealand have been stopped and searched at several major international airports such as New York, Chicago, London, Manchester and Sydney.

Fake Drugs Seized!

Almost 20,000 packages were seized during the operation. The seized packages contained fake prescription drugs from countries such as China, India, Mexico and Singapore.

Investigations at Heathrow and Manchester found over 1000 packages containing illegal prescription medication purchased through online retailers claiming to be branded drugs.

Some of the drugs ordered were bimatroprost (Glaucoma Eye drops), Insulin, Tramadol, Tadalfil and Sildenafil Citrate (Viagra).

What happens if you take fake drugs?

If you purchase drugs on-line, you have no guarantee that the medicines will actually be the ones that you receive, or that they will even contain the correct active ingredient. So, there seems to be a clear choice between a drug not working or even making you very ill! You also forfeit legal backup if you experience a reaction, or if they have no medical effect on you.

Internet Service Providers for nearly 2000 individual websites were also contacted to try to stop the flow of fake drugs.

Is it really  worth the risk?

Many online pharmacies offer empty promises that the drugs they sell at cheap rates are legitimate drugs at cheap prices, when in fact they are just cheap imitations that will probably have little to no effect at all.

Be safe – and only go to reputable on-line pharmacies that are easy to contact and transparent in their approach.

UKMeds4U only offer genuine UK/EU-sourced branded prescription-only medication (such as Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra), and will NOT dispense any POMs without first issuing a private prescription (where suitable) by a UK GMC-registered doctor.

Did you know that Viagra could ease the pain of Cystitis in women?

No? Well doctors at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University in Zhejiang, China think that it could!viagra

Not the usual, albeit painful type of cystitis which is easy to clear up, but the more serious long term form (Interstitial Cystitis) that can be very difficult to treat.

Causes and Symptoms?

It is thought that Interstitial Cystitis is caused by messages from the bladder to the brain getting mixed up, so instead of only sending messages to the brain when it is almost full, the bladder sends messages to the brain a lot more frequently, which in more extreme cases can be as frequent as every 10 minutes!

Does it actually help?

The theory behind how this works for women is that Viagra increases the blood flow to the bladder area, which in turn relaxes the muscles. By reacting in this way, the pain that is felt in the bladder area is reduced and the urge to visit the toilet as frequently is severely reduced.

Results of the study showed that the women involved showed a decrease in symptoms in a number of areas. They found that around 84% of the women tested showed a significant decrease for times they had to visit the toilet, and showed a large decrease in the amount of pain that they were in.

Light at the end of the tunnel for sufferers!

Indeed, excellent news for the estimated 400,000 people that currently suffer from Interstitial Cystitis in the UK now with around 90% of them being women, as it can be a very distressing condition and can lead to many years of pain. With this study and several others taking place, it looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel for those that have been suffering with this condition.
