Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Could Help Overweight Adults Lose 5 Stone In 6 Weeks.

A procedure, known as endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), that involves shrinking the stomach with stitches could help overweight adults lose five stone in six months.overweight

ESG is scalpel-free which means there is no scarring and patients can return to work within days.

It causes the patient to feel fuller quicker and their appetite reduced, as the stomach is around two-third to three-quarters smaller after the procedure.

It is important that they do not over-indulge as the stitches will break, which will result in the stomach returning to its original size.

Studies suggest that most of the patients who undergo this procedure lose and keep off at least 60% of their excess weight, which is around 3 stone in average.

ESG is available privately at a cost of around £10,000 or as part of an NHS trail.

An alternative to operations is medication which can help with weight loss.

Xenical and Alli are weight loss treatments currently available in the UK.

It is estimated that 1 in 4 adults in the UK are overweight/obese.

Weight Loss Pill Lorcaserin Does Not Increase the Risk of Cardiovascular Problems

Weight loss drug Lorcaserin has proven efficacy for weight loss in overweight/obese adults.bmi obesity

The medicine works by suppressing appetite and should be taken twice a day. It costs around $220-290 (£155-225) per month in the US.

Scientists also found that Lorcaserin did not raise the risk of cardiovascular problems.

12,000 obese/overweight adults who suffer from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors took part in the study. They were given Lorcaserin 10mg twice daily or placebo (a substance that is made to resemble Lorcaserin but do not contain the active ingredient).

The results showed that those taking Lorcaserin 10mg lost an average of 4kg over 40 months without the risk of further heart problems.

Lorcaserin is currently available in the US under the name Belviq.

The drug is not available in the UK or EU, as it would need a European license and be approved by NICE before doctors can start to prescribe Lorcaserin.

Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes After Quitting Smoking.

After quitting smoking we don’t just gain a few more pounds in our wallet/purse, it’s common to gain a few pounds in weight aswell. However this weight gain may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Researchers say that people who quit smoking indulge in snacks rather than smoking tobacco. These quitters are 20% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who smoke. However the risk declines after seven years.

For the study, a team from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health looked at data from more than 170,000 men and women who took part in three cohorts run by Harvard, the Nurses’ Health Study, the Nurses’ Health Study ll, and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.

Every two years, the participants had filled questionnaires about their health and lifestyle.

The researchers looked at those who said they had stopped smoking, how much weight they had gained and their type 2 diabetes risk.

The results showed that those who had quit smoking had a 22% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those who currently smoke.

Could Viagra Be A Cure For Blindness?

It has been suggested that Viagra could prevent further loss of vision for patients with poor eyesight and even repair eye damage.

Scientists at Columbia University in New York have been conducting a two year trail. They suggest that Viagra could stop age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

AMD is the UK’s leading cause of blindness.viagra

Recent research have found that AMD is partly caused by reduced blood flow to the choroid (a vital layer of tissue that sits in front of the retina), and it has been found that Viagra can improve blood flow to this tissue.

Viagra is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
