Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Could Help Overweight Adults Lose 5 Stone In 6 Weeks.

A procedure, known as endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), that involves shrinking the stomach with stitches could help overweight adults lose five stone in six months.overweight

ESG is scalpel-free which means there is no scarring and patients can return to work within days.

It causes the patient to feel fuller quicker and their appetite reduced, as the stomach is around two-third to three-quarters smaller after the procedure.

It is important that they do not over-indulge as the stitches will break, which will result in the stomach returning to its original size.

Studies suggest that most of the patients who undergo this procedure lose and keep off at least 60% of their excess weight, which is around 3 stone in average.

ESG is available privately at a cost of around £10,000 or as part of an NHS trail.

An alternative to operations is medication which can help with weight loss.

Xenical and Alli are weight loss treatments currently available in the UK.

It is estimated that 1 in 4 adults in the UK are overweight/obese.

Weight Loss Pill Lorcaserin Does Not Increase the Risk of Cardiovascular Problems

Weight loss drug Lorcaserin has proven efficacy for weight loss in overweight/obese adults.bmi obesity

The medicine works by suppressing appetite and should be taken twice a day. It costs around $220-290 (£155-225) per month in the US.

Scientists also found that Lorcaserin did not raise the risk of cardiovascular problems.

12,000 obese/overweight adults who suffer from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors took part in the study. They were given Lorcaserin 10mg twice daily or placebo (a substance that is made to resemble Lorcaserin but do not contain the active ingredient).

The results showed that those taking Lorcaserin 10mg lost an average of 4kg over 40 months without the risk of further heart problems.

Lorcaserin is currently available in the US under the name Belviq.

The drug is not available in the UK or EU, as it would need a European license and be approved by NICE before doctors can start to prescribe Lorcaserin.

High-fat Mediterranean Diet Is The Key To Weight Loss.

Counting calories may be a waste of time and dieters should instead focus on having a calorie-rich diet packed with ‘good’ fats, according to new research.

Scientists, from the University of Barcelona, tracked 7,500 men and women who either had type 2 diabetes or were at risk of heart disease.

The participants, from Spain, were analysed for 5 years and put on one of three diets.

One group had an unrestricted Mediterranean diet especially rich in olive oil, a second had a similar unrestricted diet packed with nuts, and the third group followed a conventional ‘slimmers’ diet that avoided all kinds of fat.

At the end of the five years, all three groups had lost a small amount of weight, but the participants who had the Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil had lost the most weight – an average of 0.88kg (1.9 pounds).

Those on the nut-rich diet lost the least weight – 0.40kg (0.88 pounds).

One Fifth Of Global Population Will Be Obese By 2025.

obesity obeseExperts have warned that a fifth of the world population will be obese by 2025.

Research has shown that from 1975 to 2014 the number of men and women classified as obese has risen from 105 million to 641 million.

Scientists have predicted that 18% of men and 21% of women globally will be obese by 2025.

The Lancet medical journal have published that the average BMI (Body Mass Index) has increased from 21.7 to 24.2 since the 1970s.

According to an analysis of global trends in BMI, the world has more overweight people than underweight people.

English-speaking countries including the UK, USA, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada had the biggest rise in BMI.

Professor Majid Ezzati, lead author from the School of Public Health at Imperial College London, has blamed the UK supermarkets that promote cheap ‘highly processed’ ready meals and snacks.

‘If you walk into a store in the UK, you cant help but notice that fruit is more expensive than processed foods.

‘Just imagine somebody who is having to work in three jobs, possibly minimum wage, that is going to affect their choices.

‘In France and Switzerland the idea of eating fresh fruits and wholefoods is much more common, some of that has its roots in culture.’

Could Orbera Be The Key To Weight Loss?

Orbera may be the new solution for adults struggling to lose weight, without the need for surgery. orbera

Orbera is a tiny balloon that is inserted in the stomach through the mouth, with an endoscope.

An endoscope is a long, thin medical device usually used to look inside a body cavity or organ.

The insertion is a non-surgical outpatient procedure and takes around 30 minutes.

Once the balloon is in place it is inflated with saline.

The balloon stays in place for 6 months and will help regulate portion control.

During the 6 months, and for 6 months after the balloon has been removed, the patient will also undergo coaching to help with their diet and excerise.

Orbera is suitable for patients who are morbidly obese, with a BMI (body mass index) of 30 to 40 and have already tried other diets and exercise options.

255  patients participated in a clinical trail for Orbera for 1 year.

Of the group, 125 patients had Orbera in place for 6 months and then removed.

The remaining 130 patients took part in a behavior modification program for a year, but did not receive the device.

The results showed that patients with Orbera lost an average of 21.8 pounds after the device was in place for six months.

Those patients managed to maintain an average 19.4 pounds weight loss three months after it was removed.

The 130 patients who didn’t receive the device only lost an average of 7 pounds.

The prescription only medicine Xenical is available for adults who are overweight with a BMI of 28 or over.

Can a Mediterranean diet really combat obesity and reduce the effects of metabolic syndrome?

There’s been a common belief for many years that if you eat a Mediterranean diet then you’re likely to live longer, but now, there’s research that claims that by eating a Mediterranean diet you may actually be able to reverse the effects of metabolic syndrome, by reducing obesity and blood glucose levels that lead to the condition.obesity

Metabolic syndrome is combination of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity which puts people at a higher risk of things like heart disease and strokes.

So….we thought that we would take a look into the facts and see what it all means to us…and see if there’s anything we can do to help ourselves, and you, get a bit healthier.

What’s involved?

Well….Its seems that the most important part of the diet is Olive Oil or nuts.

So, along with a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, fish and whole-grains, by adding nuts or Olive Oil you can help your weight reduce and lower your blood glucose levels.

That sounds too good to be true doesn’t it?

The research..

This information has come from a Spanish study done at Universitat Rovira i Virgili and Hospital Universitari de Sant Joan de Reus on a group of nearly 5800 men and women (aged 55-80) and were all at risk of heart disease. They were split into three groups, One group ate a Mediterranean diet with extra olive oil, another had the Mediterranean diet, with added nuts and the final ate a traditional low-fat diet. (you know…they one we’re all trying to follow).

Research showed the both the ‘Mediterranean diet’ groups lost weight and reduced their blood sugar levels…Pretty significant, bearing in mind the current advice is to follow a low-fat diet to achieve these results!

The Mediterranean diet also seems to stop people from collecting fat around their middles (the classic apple shape), which is commonly identified as being a precursor to diabetes…

It is estimated that if we increased the amount of fruit and vegetables we eat by just one portion per day, and the amount of nuts eaten by two portions per week, then this could prevent up to 5.2 million deaths from cardiovascular disease in just one year!

So, will you change?

It seems like our Mediterranean cousins have been getting it right all this time….Maybe think of every meal as a mini holiday…. but we’re not sure all the wine counts!
