Could Modafinil Treat Premature Ejaculation?

Doctors have discovered that a drug students use to stay awake longer can also help men suffering from premature ejaculation.

Modafinil, marketed as Provigil, is licensed to treat people who can fall asleep suddenly and unexpectedly, known as narcolepsy.

The drug is popular almong students who need to  stay awake longer to prepare for exams and it has been reported that it can boost memory by 10%.

A 30 year old man, who has been suffering from premature ejaculation since puberty, was given a 100mg dose before sex for two weeks and went from performing for just 60 seconds to 15 minutes.

55 men, aged between 22 to 55, took part in a study in Turkey which showed that men with severe premature ejaculation could increase their performance from 20 seconds to 90 seconds.

Premature ejaculation is when a man ejaculates with little sexual stimulation and before the man wants.

It has been estimated that 25% of men in the UK suffer from premature ejaculation.

However Modafinil hasn’t offically been approved to treat premature ejaculation.

So  until (or if) it does, then perhaps prescription medicine (such as Priligy) would be an appropriate treatment.

If You Take Viagra You Are Less Likely To Suffer From A Heart Attack

Men who take Viagra, a drug to treat impotence, are less likely to suffer from a heart attack or die from heart failure, new research suggests.

Experts from the University of Manchester studied 6,000 diabetic patients who had been prescribed Viagra to treat impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction.

Although it is common for diabetics to have heart problems, the participants did not suffer as many incidents as similar patients not taking Viagra.

Viagra works by helping to relax the blood vessels in your penis.

Viagra belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5i) and experts believe this is the key ingredient which helps prevent damage to heart cells.

Professor Andrew Trafford said: ‘Heart failure is a devastating condition which means your heart is not pumping blood around your body as well as it used to.

It can really impact a person’s quality of life and currently the outlook for patients with heart failure is grim – worse than that of some cancers.

The team is now assessing whether the same drug can also prevent abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) which are responsible for killing up to half of heart failure patients.

Previous research published in the journal BMC Medicine showed how Viagra (also known as sidenfil citrate) could help to prevent the heart increasing in size and changing shape in patients with a condition called left ventricular hypertrophy.

Our studies have shown that drugs normally used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, such as Viagra, actually have a very pronounced effect in slowing the progression of heart failure as well as reducing the likelihood of fatal arrhythmias.

We have recently established that patients who receive Viagra or similar drugs for erectile dysfunction are also far less likely to then go on and die from a heart attack.’

Viagra was originally developed to treat heart conditions, but during original trails it was found to be more effective at treating erectile dysfunction.

The Effects Alcohol Can Have On Your Body

If you regularly drink more than 14 units a week you are a risk of damaging your health.pint-of-beer-1543005

The type of illnesses you can develop after 10-20 years of consuming more than 14 units a week regularly include:

  • stroke
  • heart disease
  • cancers of the month, throat and breast
  • liver disease
  • brain damage

If you do drink mosts week and want to reduce the risk of harming your health then you should spread your drinking over three days or more and not consume more than 14 units a week.

Drinking heavily over a long period can affect your mental health and can increase the risk of feeling suicidal and depressed.

If you drink too much too quickly on a single occasion (also known as ‘single session’ drinking)  you are at a greater risk of accidents and injuries, such as:

  • fractures
  • alcohol poisoning
  • heart disease
  • head injuries

To avoid these risks you should:

  • drink more slowly
  • alternate with water or non-alcoholic drinks
  • drink with food
  • limit how much you drink
  • make sure you are with people you know
  • avoid risky/dangerous places and activities

People tend to ‘single session’ drink at parties and sporting events.

Alcohol can make you act differently and you might make decisions you normally wouldn’t make, such as having unprotected sex.

Remember – the less you drink, the lower the health risks.

Do You Want To Live As Long As The Queen?

Once you reach the age of 90, you stop ageing, according to Michael Rose, a professor of evolutionary biology.

Professor Rose suggests that you should start a ‘Stone Age’ diet from the age of 30.

The diet should include fruits, nuts, seafood and vegetables and grains and dairy products should be avoided.

For those in doubt, the University of California professor practises what he preaches. He says: ‘I have been following such a diet – avoiding grass-derived foods, such as grains, rice, corn and sugar cane, and anything made from milk – for two years and the results have been good.’

Statistics have shown that ageing seems to come to a halt at 93 and does not start again until we get a telegram from the Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II is currently celebrating her 90th birthday.

High-fat Mediterranean Diet Is The Key To Weight Loss.

Counting calories may be a waste of time and dieters should instead focus on having a calorie-rich diet packed with ‘good’ fats, according to new research.

mediterranean diet

Scientists, from the University of Barcelona, tracked 7,500 men and women who either had type 2 diabetes or were at risk of heart disease.

The participants, from Spain, were analysed for 5 years and put on one of three diets.

One group had an unrestricted Mediterranean diet especially rich in olive oil, a second had a similar unrestricted diet packed with nuts, and the third group followed a conventional ‘slimmers’ diet that avoided all kinds of fat.

At the end of the five years, all three groups had lost a small amount of weight, but the participants who had the Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil had lost the most weight – an average of 0.88kg (1.9 pounds).

Those on the nut-rich diet lost the least weight – 0.40kg (0.88 pounds).

New Viagra Skin Patch

In 1998, Viagra was the first and only oral pill to be approved by the FDA to treat impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction.

Scientists have been trying for many years to develop new ways to get a drug like Viagra into the blood stream without going via the stomach to reduce the risk of side effects.

But a team at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, along with scientists at Cairo University have made a breakthrough  and developed the first stick on patch to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), containing the same active ingredient in Viagra – Sildenafil Citrate.

The patch can take effect within minutes and still be effective beyond 10 hours, compared to Viagra which takes 30-60 minutes to take effect and is only effective for up to 4 hours.

Men will no longer suffer from the side effects which are caused by ingesting the little blue pill such as indigestion, migraines and headaches.

The new skin plaster, which can be worn on the upper arm or abdomen, has been tested on rats and the results were promising.

There are currently no indications as to when (or if) it will be approved for use in the UK.

If it does get approved, it will only be available as a Prescription Only Medication (POM) like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.

So, until the patch actually becomes available, if you, or someone you love, have been diagnosed with ED, then perhaps prescription medication (such as Cialis, Levitra, or Viagra) would be an appropriate treatment.

Smoking During Pregnancy Increases The Risk Of Baby Developing Schizophrenia

Expectant mothers who smoke during pregnancy increase the risk of their baby developing schizophrenia in later life, a study has revealed.

This image was taken from bbc.co.uk.

Data on 1,000 schizophrenia patients were examined for the study. Scientists matched their birth and health records with those of non-affected ‘control’ individuals.

Smoking habits were assessed by looking at the levels of nicotine marker, cotinine, in their blood.

The results showed that a fifth of mums of schizophrenia patients smoked heavily during pregnancy, compared to 14.7% of mothers of controls.

Smoking during pregnancy can harm your unborn baby as it can reduce oxygen supply to the foetus, which causes their heart to beat harder. This increases the risk of premature birth, low birth weight and stillbirth.

Senior researcher Professor Alan Brown, from the University of Columbia, New York, said: ‘To our knowledge, this is the first biomarker-based study to show a relationship between foetal nicotine exposure and schizophrenia.

These findings underscore the value of ongoing public health education on the potentially debilitating, and largely preventable, consequences that smoking may have on children over time.

Further studies could shed light on exactly how nicotine affects a foetus’ brain.

Finally, it is of interest to examine maternal cotinine in relation to bipolar disorder, autism, and other psychiatric disorders.’

Man Fractures His Penis During Sex

A 32 year old man was rushed to hospital after his penis turned black and swollen after engaging in ‘vigorous’ sexual intercourse.

The man from New Delhi heard a ‘snapping’  sound during sexual intercourse which then resulted in him suffering from severe pain and caused his penis to bend.

After an examination he was diagnosed with penile fracture.

Doctors carried out ultrasounds which revealed that he had torn the wall of the right corpora cavernosa.

Corpora cavernosa are two chambers which run the length of the penis and are filled with erectile tissue.

Blood flows into the tissue which causes the penis to harden.

Penile fracture occurs when an erect penis undergoes blunt trauma during sexual intercourse or masturbation.

Penile fracture can cause other problems in the future including erectile dysfunction.

This is because scar tissue will form as the penis heals which will prevent blood flow to the tissue.

Erectile dysfunction is a condition where the penis does not harden and expand when a man is sexually excited.

A High BMI Doesn’t Mean Unhealthy.

Experts have asked for a change in the way body mass index (BMI) is calculated, after it has been found that people classed as overweight actually live the longest.bmi

A study which covered 30 years found that people with a BMI of 27, which is considered as being overweight, have the lowest risk of dying from any condition.

The findings raised further questions about the BMI system as it cannot recognise muscle from fat.

As muscle is much heavier than fat, a well-built muscular athlete may be  categorised as obese when infact they are very healthy.

Body mass index is used to measure if you are at a healthy weight for your height.

For adults:

  • a BMI of under 18.5 means you are considered underweight
  • a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 means you are considered healthy weight
  • a BMI of 25 to 29.9 means you are considered overweight
  • a BMI of 30 to 39.9 means you are considered obese
  • a BMI of 40 or above means you are considered severely obese

The average BMI for a British woman is 26.9 and for a man is 27. Therefore the average adult in Britian is considered as overweight.

Researchers from Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark led a study which showed that the healthiest measurement had increased by 3.3 BMI points since the 1970s.

Would Financial Incentives Encourage You To Stop Smoking?

stop smoking
This image was taken from bbc.co.uk.

Hospitals in France are offering money to expectant mothers if they are willing to give up smoking while being pregnant, which will hopefully lead to a smoke free life as a mother.

The new study, carried out by Paris’s public hospital system in association with the National Cancer Institute, will test whether financial incentives will encourage them to stay away from tobacco throughout pregnancy.

The mothers-to-be that show dedication to give up their addiction will be rewarded in €20 vouchers and if they do not start smoking again they can receive up to €300 in total.

Women who are over 18 years old, are less than 4 months pregnant, smoke more then five manufactured cigarettes or three rolled cigarettes each day can participate in the study.

The participants are subject to frequent testing to make sure they are not using e-cigarettes or other tobacco products as these are prohibited.

French health minister Marisol Touraine said France was “the European country where pregnant women smoke the most”.

This statement came after figures revealed that in 2015 one in five French women did not give up smoking during pregnancy.

Smoking during pregnancy can harm your unborn baby as it can reduce oxygen supply to the foetus, which causes their heart to beat harder. This increases the risk of premature birth, low birth weight and stillbirth.
