Could Sildenafil Increase Skin Cancer Risk?

Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, was originally developed to treat heart conditions, but during original trials it was found to be more effective at treating erectile dysfunction (also known as impotence).sildenafil

But now, scientists have warned that the drug could increase the risk of melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Researchers at the University of Tübingen in Germany have discovered that Sildenafil can encourage tumors to grow more rapidly.

A recent study found that Sildenafil can stimulate skin cancer growth.

Sildenafil has a stimulating effect on the messenger molecule cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which promotes the growth of existing malignant melanomas.

The scientist came to this conclusion through animal experiments and human cell cultures.

Cells normally contain an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), that ensures the newly-formed cGMP is continuously broken down.

But, Sildenafil belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE 5) inhibitors.

Study author Professor Robert Feil said: ‘Taking sildenafil basically disables this brake.’

Consequently, the melanoma begins to grow more aggressively.

However, the study noted that there is no reason for men to stop taking PDE5 inhibitors to treat erectile dysfunction.

The researchers also have to take into account that the possibility that a higher incidence of skin cancer may be due to lifestyles, including sunbathing on holiday.

Professor Feil warned: ‘Ultimately, we should all be thinking about reducing our risk of skin cancer and cutting our exposure time to the sun, as well as using effective UV protection.’

Sildenafil is marketed as Viagra and was approved by FDA (The Food and Drug Administration) on 27th March 1988. Pfizer’s patent on Sildenafil expired on 21 June 2013.

If you are concerned that Sildenafil (Viagra) could increase the risk of skin cancer then there is other alternative prescription only  medication for erectile dysfunction such as Cialis and Levitra.

Pearling Can Cause Erectile Dysfunction

In recent years there has been a rise in men turning to ‘pearling’ to enhance sexual pleasure for their partner during intercourse. pearling cause erectile dysfunction

Pearling entails the men to insert plastic beads or pearls under the skin of his penis by either a piercing professional or by the man himself. This is meant to boost physical stimulation by applying extra friction to a womans clitoris.

Dr Tobias Kohler, men’s sexual health expert, has warn that pearling can be dangerous as it can damage the urethra (a tube that carries urine from the bladder) and cause chronic pain, and even cause erectile dysfunction and scar tissue formation.

It has been reported that a 19 year old  man from Flordia tried inserting a pearl into his penis, but seven hours after making the incision he was rushed to hospital with swelling and worsening pain to his penis and blood in his urine.
Doctors had to remove a hematoma (a deep swelling of clotted blood) and cauterized the wounds to stop the bleeding.

The truth about Roll-up cigarettes!

Roll-up’s are just as bad for you!

The UK Chief Medical Officer has now warned that roll-up cigarettes are no less harmful for you than standard pre-packaged cigarettes bought over the counter. This information is contrary to many smokers belief that roll-up cigarettes were less harmful for them than pre-packaged cigarettes.

It has now been claimed by the Chief Medical Officer that any form of smoking, whether it is roll-up or pre packaged cigarettes, is bad for you and will ‘rot’ the body from the inside.

Where’s the fuss come from?

A lot of health officials are getting more and more worried with the rise of people smoking roll-up cigarettes as they are a cheaper alternative to pre-packaged cigarettes. In a recent study, figures showed that 40% of male smokers and 23% of female smokers use roll-up cigarettes.

What is worrying the health officials, is that 49% of the people involved in the study believed that smoking the roll-up cigarettes was less harmful for them than smoking the pre-packaged cigarettes.

What are they doing about it?

In order to get their point across about roll-up cigarettes being just as harmful, the government has started an aggressive advertising campaign that is designed to shock people that smoke roll-up cigarettes and make them think about the damage being caused to their bodies.

Image used by the NHS in their Smokefree campaign

In one of the adverts, roll-up cigarettes are shown with rotting body tissue coming out of them, whilst in another of the adverts, a smoker inhales from a roll-up cigarette, then you see an x-ray image of their insides with contaminated blood rushing through his body from their lungs to their heart and brain.

Stop smoking and stop the ‘rot’!

The earlier a smoker quits, the better chance they have of reversing some of the damage that has already been done to their body. Recent studies have shown that around one in five british people smoke, which is the lowest recorded figure in nearly 80 years!

It looks like the government and health officials are looking to try and get this figure even lower with their shock and awe advertising tactics.

If you are looking to try and quit smoking, you can get excellent advice and help by visiting the NHS Smokefree website.
